St. Joseph’s Senior Secondary School Naggalama is a Catholic founded non-profit making private co-educational day and boarding school owned by the Registered Trustees of Lugazi Diocese. It was started in 1967 by Naggalama Parish with quite limited goals of offering affordable secondary education to children from within the parish who could not make it to the then popular destinations of primary school leavers.
The situation has changed. The school’s spectacular academic performance is widely known throughout the country. It is ranked among the top ten secondary schools at both Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) and thus attracts students with excellent Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) and UCE results from all corners of the country. This has created demand especially on the infrastructure necessary for teaching and learning and boarding facilities.
The school has a Board of Governors which plans, monitors and evaluates all the school’s operations. Annually, the Board reviews its capital development priorities to match available funds and emerging needs. These have to be captured in the annual budget estimates.
The school does not receive any funding from the state. The principal source of funds for both recurrent and capital expenditure is parents. Small donations in cash and in kind account for less than 0.1% of revenue. Where cash flow requirements dictate, borrowing is authorised by the Board. Even in these cases, it is ultimately the parents who service the loans through various levies.
The school has registered notable successes in obtaining maximum value for money in capital expenditure management having spent shs. 3,672,913,823 (US $1,412,659 at $1=2,600 UGX) in the last five academic years on priority projects including classroom and boarding facilities, water, electricity, health, sanitation and security. Funds availed for the development of innovative instructional programmes especially in Science and Mathematics are severely limited by day to day operational exigencies.

The recently commissioned ‘Prince of Peace’ boys’ dormitory accommodates up to 450 students, reflecting the school’s commitment to quality infrastructure . All dormitories are spacious, gender-segregated, and designed to promote a conducive atmosphere for academic focus and personal growth. The boarding setup ensures that students benefit from close supervision and a supportive community throughout their stay.
Religious Affairs
Religious life is central to our community, guided by our Catholic heritage. Students actively participate in regular Masses, including special services like the S.4 and S.6 blessing Masses. The school observes liturgical seasons with activities such as the Way of the Cross during Lent and Thanksgiving Masses, fostering spiritual growth and reflection. Under the guidance of our chaplain, students engage in both liturgical and non-liturgical activities, nurturing a deep connection to their faith and moral values.
